JD your a great American, I really appreciate everything you do... I could have been a good off grider, I could have been a good hunter but I'm neither, I'm a conservative suburbanite who loves America, freedom and capitalism... I can probably make a bonfire boil water and have a few chickens if the foxes don't get them, what am I reasonably going to be able to do if TSHTF? I'm thinking/ hope this will come out in your basics... really need help!

Seems to me we’re going to need to basically create a fully functioning alternate society. So food reserves need to turn into alternate long term food supply. Bill Gates owns a majority of farmland I heard? How do we organize community gardens to provide long term local food supply that’s not controlled by the WEF? Or is there another solution? I don’t know anything about gardening and most things I would want to grow are not easy to grow in SoCal. (Bananas, blueberries, apples)

Peter, with respect, what you want to grow is irrelevant. What you need to rethink is what WILL grow well in the climate in which you live. It's not about you or your wants. It's about survival which is based on facts, not wants or wishes.

I would like to understand the accuracy of things that pop up in conservative media. Best example currently is Iodine pills. I don't understand what and why we would need them or how to acquire a supply or how many!

Body takes up iodine. A lot of radioactive iodine is emitted from a nuclear explosion. You want to give the body non radioactive iodine. I believe that iodine is needed for some vital systems and you don't want them failing due to being radioactive. I think. It's been a while since I read up on that stuff.

Thank you. I never expected to even wonder about this!

Final word of advice. If you cannot defend what you have from thieves and even government, you cannot survive. Desperate people do desperate things so be prepared for all eventualities and the odds of you and your family surviving go up dramatically.

JD, thanks for writing this blog as many are not prepared in any way. In my community, preparedness begins with the knowledge that one must have ALL of the basics, those being beans, bullets, and bandaids, for one cannot survive a collapse, long or short term, without all these essential goods. Please note that just having these will not help one survive until one learns how to use them all properly. That requires training and practice which requires a group as it is extremely rare that one individual has all the knowledge in all these areas plus the experience in using them.

Here is a simple example that may help your readers grasp a fundamental concept. While giving a talk to a group, I asked them what is the most essential item we all must have to survive? Only one person knew the answer and that was because he was a Veteran. The answer is not food or water but the ability to regulate one's body temperature, for you can live without food for 30 days and without water for 7 days, but you can die of cold or heat in a few hours IF you are not prepared to deal with the elements.

Keep up and the good work and may God Bless you and your efforts, for we ARE at war even if we refuse to admit that fact, for our enemies don't care if we accept the fact that THEY are at war with US! In Hoc Signo Vinces.

Water- I have a well but without electricity how do I acquire it- the table is 150 feet, the well is 250 feet? How best to store potable and non-potable (utility) water. I have a water purifier (Aquapure? With extra filters). Also have a pool and septic. But the septic needs power- battery? Generator? I need to add rain catchment devices.

Water is for so many things- drinking, preparing dehydrated food storage, washing body and cooking and laundry- so best way to reuse water? Such as first use utility water (or potable?) for soapy dish water then use that water next for laundry? Then for toilets? Water (for me) is vital on the first day of true survival mode.

Detailed guides on issues like this- How To’s with specifics. Lists of needed items in each category.

I second the opinion of a previous poster- Point us to reputable books or online sources. No need to reinvent the wheel- but the information out there is overwhelming- who to trust vs who is a waste of valuable time in reading.

I am personally SO thankful you are doing this!

Thanks JD for all you do. How much cash should we have on hand if things go south?

Voco Veritas's avatar

Cliffy, there is a possibility that in a collapse, the US dollar will quickly become worthless so the only assets worth having are precious metals and other tangible goods you can use to barter. Silver is ideal as it is much less expensive than gold so you don't have to try to spend thousands of dollars at a time which is what one ounce of gold costs now, and that cost will likely multiply to who knows how much. If you can find it, try to acquire a supply of what is called "junk" silver which is coins made before 1972 when they government started adding a core of metal to the center of the coins that was not silver. These coins are legal tender plus they are 90% silver so they will have value even after a collapse.

Best to have a little cash for the short term as it will retain some value until the collapse is complete, them precious metals and tangibles are the only things that will retain value. The amount is up to you though it is wise to have a stash as you recognize that the ATMs and banks will likely be closed when the collapse begins in earnest. And find a good group of people who share your concerns for no one person can survive alone regardless of how bad ass they are as they cannot stay awake 24/7 indefinitely. God Bless & keep you.

Some subjects: how to cook a microwave only or made for microwave dish or meal. Lots of folks will have dozens in their freezers. Also in general how to cook without a microwave. Lots of folks won't know. What to buy now even tho the prices are high. Are there deals out there due to caloric content. Cooking utensils what to buy what to ignore what can be made to work.

This is a good stack. A tad late but still timely. We can't be sure when things will fall to pieces.

jake, think much longer term. When the power goes off, anything requiring cold to keep from spoiling will spoil. Check out this video and use it to research the topic of making your own food storage supply. It is inexpensive and works. I recommend getting a vacuum sealer so you can store 1-2# quantities for individual packages.

Since you are not an expert, please report on the advice of those who devote their lives to preparation.

jakee308's avatar

Yeah maybe some reviews to guide who's good and who's just yakking.

Voco Veritas's avatar

Don't wait on other people. Take the initiative and learn on your own. Better, find a local group you can join to share knowledge and self defense issues.

I'm really looking forward to this newsletter and comments by interesting, like minded individuals with a variety of ideas. Survival prepping isn't a cookie cutter approach, as we all have as different situations and needs as our personalities..

jakee308's avatar

It will be different due to location because of population, the growing zone you're in. How quickly and well an authority of some sort gets organized and whether it is fair and strong. You may be the one to be the authority depending on where you live. Keep that in mind.

Also don't forget how far or near a nuke took place. I'm hoping that Vlad and the people here realize this is not very wise to let this go further. No one wins.

All definitely absolutes,.. I think there is methods and reasoning to the madness.
